Charles Gilbert was born 1 May 1830. He enlisted in the army as a Private on 7 Aug 1862 at the age of 32. At his enlistment, his residence was recorded as Gardner, Massachusetts and his occupation as mechanic. He was assigned to Company H, 36th Infantry Regiment, Massachusetts, on 27 Aug 1862. He was wounded on 25 June 1864 and died of his wounds on 9 July 1864. Since he is in his Civil War uniform here, that would place the date of this picture between Aug 1862 and June 1864.
Charles was married 9 Oct 1853 to Jane Elizabeth Davis, my GG-Aunt.
